  15. Description: Tool to replay saved tcpdump files at arbitrary speeds
  16. Tcpreplay is aimed at testing the performance of a NIDS by
  17. replaying real background network traffic in which to hide
  18. attacks. Tcpreplay allows you to control the speed at which the
  19. traffic is replayed, and can replay arbitrary tcpdump traces. Unlike
  20. programmatically-generated artificial traffic which doesn't
  21. exercise the application/protocol inspection that a NIDS performs,
  22. and doesn't reproduce the real-world anomalies that appear on
  23. production networks (asymmetric routes, traffic bursts/lulls,
  24. fragmentation, retransmissions, etc.), tcpreplay allows for exact
  25. replication of real traffic seen on real networks. It included the following
  26. executables tcpprep, tcprewrite, tcpreplay-edit, tcpbridge and pcap
  27. based captures are possible.
